Fletch
Ok. Added 3.5-5 cm top layer. Took forever to wash sand out but hopefully I did it well enough. Covered with glad wrap. Weighted in each corner with a rock. Filling via two airlines running in. Slow but don't want bottom disturbed. :-)

Sarah
Very nice! What does the clad wrap do? Separate the layers of soil/cap? Just thinking aloud, no idea, but wouldn't that stop the plants getting to the soil?
Fletch
Stops the bottom being disturbed when filling. Removed it once tank half full. :-).

Fletch
Already have some pearling on the elodia and Val. :-).
Matt_95
Looks good The val and eloidia should love it, they can both access carbonate as a source of carbon, I beleive that is how the marble produces the carbon.
SiameseFightingFist
Already have some pearling on the elodia and Val. :-). What's pearling?
Matt_95
when the plants release O2 gas through their leaves and the water surrounding the plants is saturated with dissolved gasses the oxeygen builds up in little bubbles caled pearls on the suface of the plant. melbournebetta
this is EXACTLY the step by step i'd need if i ever got game enough to indulge in substrate (the 1cm coverage in the sorority has since GONE) LOVE it... just in time for a special little photo comp too! perfecto (p.s. love the ginger feline quality control!) xx
SiameseFightingFist
Thanks, would it happen the other way around too? Build up of CO2?
Matt_95
Not really, plants do release CO2 at night but its not as much as the O2 released during the day, it would work for any gas....
SiameseFightingFist
See, this is why I thought you were at uni. You sound like you know what you're talking about. And also you're tall.
Fletch
As an eg of pearling. A really good sign. :-) Thanks everyone. I am very interested to see the results. foster02vn
It is really nice. Have some questions .Why do you need rocks in corners? and what type of sand is on the top layer?
shadoh
The rocks in the corners was only to hold the glad wrap down. The glad wrap was put on top to stop the sand from getting stirred up while the tank was filling. Rocks and gladwrap were removed once half filled as per the photos of the finished tank. The sand on the top layer is the Brunnings brand propagating sand (as shown in the 1st photo of substrate ingredients) bottom layer is unwashed layer of the same sand (has high clay content, so plants love it. Top layer is rinsed (to remove clay so tank water doesn't become cloudy...)
