  1. Ha, oh don't worry, I'll probably post every time I do something to this tank.... And I haven't quite sent myself broke yet, especially seeing as I ended up getting the tank for $70 in the end because the guy I bought it from is awesome... Though I may have turned a little green with envy when he opened his garage door onto an epic fishroom, and showed me all the fancy bristlenose he's breeding.

But yes, it's home now and sitting in the backyard, it needs a clean and I'm gonna re-paint the stand, but one of the next steps is working out how to attach a canister filter to the plumbing it's already got installed... Will post pics of it tomorrow.

  2. Hey all, so, I may or may not have been on Ebay earlier this afternoon.... <_<

I ended up winning the bid on this for $80 -

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/270975671769?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649#ht_500wt_1202

For those who can't be bothered clicking the link, it's a 6 foot long tiered waterfall tank with stand :D anyhoo, I saw it and something in my head told me it may make a freakin' wicked barracks.... now I just need to work out the details of how to turn it into such. I also need to work out where in my house I'm going to put the blasted thing, but that's another issue I'll have to work out for myself :P (I'm starting to think an insulated shed for a fishroom may not be an entirely bad idea)

I've still got a canister filter kicking around from when I had my 4 foot tank with resident oscar (before oscar got sick and carked it, and tank was cracked when moving and is now my snake tank), I'll have to check what model it is but I'm guessing I'll need something decent to move the water from one end to the other and back again, from memory it had a bit of grunt to it.... it was working last I checked but that was a while ago now, it'll need a good clean at the very least, hopefully it still works and I haven't lost all the pipes and whatnot for it. There's also the question of how to heat it, once I find out how many litres it actually is

Anyways, I was also thinking of giving the planted tank thing a go with this one, I've always envied pretty planted tanks, but never managed anything beyond driftwood and ornaments for my own tanks.... I'll have a dig through the forums for info and how-to's but if anyone has any particular ideas/advice, it's all welcome.

But yes.... WOOT FOR SENDING MYSELF TO THE POORHOUSE!

  3. My guys are going awesome, they recognise me as the food lady too, haha ^_^ No losses, so still have all five, I think I've got three turquoise and two look like they might be royal blues, there's a little bit of red wash on a couple of them too by the looks of things... however saying that, I'm going by what they look like when I shine a torch at them, as the smallest has nearly no colour yet and one of the bigger ones seems paler than the others. I was also wondering about the crowntail thing, I had a good look at the biggest of the five today and thought that its tail seemed to be getting a little spiky :P

The frogbit however seems to have gone splat, I'm not sure what happened there, but I've put the last few bits that still looked like they were hanging on into Travis's community tank and they seem to have perked up a bit.... the babies don't seem to mind having no plant stuff in there at any rate.

Mine have all grown a fair bit too, though there's one that's literally half the size of the others, and because I look at them everyday it's a little harder for me to see how they're growing but Trav looked at them today and said they're all a lot bigger so I guess I must be doing something right :P I'll ask him to take some photos with his macro setting on his DSLR, I won't post them but will keep them for the end. As of this afternoon the smallest and the biggest of the five are in their own jars, I want to feed them separately so that the little one gets his fair share of dinner and so the biggest one stops stealing everyone else's food. As well as the BBS, for the past couple of days I've tried them on pellets crushed basically to powder and they seem keen on that too, they spot it as it sinks and then spend the next little while picking it all up from the bottom of the tank :D I also spent ages one afternoon sifting out the smallest blackworms I could out of the tub I've got, and the few I thought were small enough were nommed in the blink of an eye, lol.

And at the very least, this is making me a bit more hopeful that I might not fail completely at raising the fry when I finally get my boy to spawn with one of the girlies I bought, if he ever gets the point and starts looking interested in breeding as opposed to just wanting to beat the girlies up >_>

  4. Yeah, it was good to meet people in person finally ^_^ sad about those two fry though Sarah, poor little things :/ my guys all got home and into their new tank fine, the smallest one (around the 1cm mark) I'm keeping a close eye on, but they all started investigating as soon as I put them in the tank and later all had a bit of a snack when I gave them some BBS. Though I really need to get some coffee filter papers or something to strain them out of the saltwater, it took me far too much messing around this afternoon with what I had lying around at home, lol.

  5. I know I'm posting this late, but I might actually be interested in a tank or two from you Krystal, if you're wanting to get rid of them.... I'll have to convince the boy that we've got the space for them first though, lol. Might talk to you about it when we get there this arvo, we'll just have to organise a later date for us to come pick them up (depending on whether or not I win the argument, haha :P)

  6. Ha, I'll give this a go too, figured I'd come and check out the thread after you mentioned it at the store this arvo.... the bf was kinda interested in getting himself a betta as well anyways, so this could work out well, lol (though he can strain his eyes looking for the bluest looking baby :D). At any rate, worst comes to worst we'll be out five bucks. We'll drop into the store tomorrow morning to pick them up, and now knowing my luck we'll pick all females or something :P though I'll go look to see if there's previous grooming threads, get more of an idea about what it is we'll need to do, if it's anything other than just making sure the little guys grow up.

  7. Ahahaha, beware the vicious goldfish! :D rofl

Well, as of this afternoon, we have a house! We go and sign the lease in the morning, and then the fun of moving in starts. At least there's only the one fish tank that will be difficult to move, kinda thankful it's only a 2 foot tank.... moving when I had fish in my old 4 foot tank was just painful. That tank has my snake in there now, but he'll be easy enough to stick in a box for the actual moving. Funny thing is, I haven't actually seen the inside of the place yet, my boyfriend went and looked at it while I was at the races with a horse on the weekend, so this could be interesting come tomorrow morning, hopefully there's room for more tanks, lol.

  8. OMG Krystal, those photos are awesome, thanks heaps! ^_^ Loving that one of him front on, he's such a handsome boy.

Melbournebetta, LOL, my boyfriend might have issues with me marrying someone else :P but keep me in mind when your little ones are ready for new homes, I'm happy to wait if I have to, they are halfmoons, yes? And I may very well drop Somchai2500 a line to see if he's got any girlies for sale, depending on my finances and whatnot.

Though we had no luck with the house we applied for the other day :( but went and applied for another two this morning, hopefully we get better news about one of these.... I'd forgotten how annoying house hunting is, especially when you show up to look at a place to rent and there are 23489724509872340987234 other people there looking at the same place. It's almost making me want to grit my teeth and stay where I am now, just to save up a deposit for a house and BUY a freakin' place *grumble grumble*

  9. Haha, hiya Krystal, I do still feel kinda slack that I didn't find your name out until just now. Yeah, Mr Fishy is doing well, he's a feisty little guy, that photo is what he looks like pretty much all the time (except when he's sleeping, then he kinda flops down and rests on top of the mask ornament thing in his tank), I'll need to get some decent pics of him flaring up properly though. I also need to think of a name for him, maybe something a bit more imaginative than Fishie Fishie, lol. I've kinda got my eye on that black delta tail male at the store you work at, I haven't quite decided yet if I want him or not though, but if we get this house and he hasn't been sold by the time we move in, he's coming to live with me :D And funnily enough, I'm the same about horses, I'm not the biggest fan of racing but to be honest it's the only job with horses that pays enough to live decently enough on, and the job itself is kinda fun.

Hazell, yup, it's a phone pic, I've got an LG Optimus, the Optimus One model I think it is, the camera on it actually seems better for taking close up pics of small things than anything else really.... it struggles with anything more than a few metres away. His tank is on a little table in my bedroom by the window, so there was decent natural light for the camera to pick up on.

And thanks to everyone else for the welcome, I might not post much for the next few days while I read up on a bunch of stuff on here, but as soon as I get the ball rolling on my breeding plans, don't worry, you'll be hearing ALL about it, lol. Speaking of which, if anyone has any suggestions for what kinds of females I should get that would be a good match for him colour-wise or in regards to finnage, feel free to let me know, the last time I tried to breed bettas was ages ago with just the random veiltails that were the only thing available for the longest time. Though that might not happen until after we move house, we went and handed in our application this morning first thing, so hopefully we have some luck and the owner is cool and approves us, so we can move in soon and there's more room for fish tanks :P keeping fingers crossed til we hear back from the real estate.

  10. Hey all, just joined this forum a day or so ago, I was told about it by a girl who works at my local aquarium store so figured I should check it out... unfortunately I didn't catch her name, and now I feel really slack about that <_<

My name's Meredith, and after a few years of not having any fish I got myself a betta a couple of weeks ago.... my boyfriend had recently decided out of the blue that he wanted a fish tank, so we got him a little 2 foot tropical set up a couple of weeks ago and he's in the process of stocking it now, at the moment he's got a couple of bolivian butterflies and a handful of neon tetras... though it was on a trip to the fish store before he'd gotten anything and was trying to decide on what to get that I spotted what is now my new salamander halfmoon boy, yay for impulse buying, lol ^_^ I'm planning on getting into breeding using him, so I'm on the lookout for good quality halfmoon females at the moment, not having much luck so far but I'm hoping someone on here may be able to help me out with my search.

As for things in my life other than impulse fishie purchases :P it's mostly trying to balance out my time between working at a racing stable, going to play with my own horse, playing video games and making costumes, with a little bit of looking for a new house thrown in as of late. We went and looked at an awesome place to rent yesterday, just gotta get our applications in to the real estate office and hopefully we get it.... we'll have more space than we currently do, all the more room for fish tanks, haha :D

Anyway, this is my boy, just a dodgy pic taken on my phone camera, I'll have to get my boyfriend to take some decent shots with his DSLR sometime soon. Because yeah, the water *really* isn't cloudy, I'm not entirely sure why my phone decided to make it look that way.
